You Are a Writer: So Start Acting Like One

You Are a WriterEverybody has something they wish they were:

  • The mom who wishes she was more patient with her kids.
  • The retired athlete who wishes he was still in the game.
  • The actor who never made it to Tinsel Town and lives vicariously through old films.

A lot of people wait around to be picked. To be affirmed in their callings. To hold out hope for someone to come along and tell them they are what they wished they were.

When it came to thinking of myself as a writer, I was the same. I wanted someone else it to acknowledge my gifts so I didn’t have to.

Until I started believing I was a writer, I couldn’t act like one. So I made a decision that changed everything: I started calling myself a writer.

For the past several months, I’ve been working on an eBook about this change of mind. It’s called, You Are a Writer (So Start Acting Like One), and it releases today.

About the eBook

In You Are a Writer, Jeff Goins provides the tools and insights you need to build your platform, develop an audience, and make meaningful connections. No writer should embark on his or her writing journey without reading this first!
Michael Hyatt // Author, Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World

This is an eBook about what it takes to be a writer in the 21st Century.

In it, you will learn everything from how to get started with a writing career to ultimately getting your work published — and all the wonderful work in between.

Mostly, you will learn the importance of believing in your calling and showing up every day to do what you were made to do: write.

My friend, Sarah Mae, who wrote the Foreword, talked me into writing this book. She even gave me the title. I can’t thank her enough for pushing me in this direction.

Also, Erin Johnson designed all the artwork for the cover and website, and Erick Nelson helped me with the conversions. I would heartily recommend both individuals, if you’re looking for help with publishing an eBook.

In speaking to audiences of bloggers and writers, I’ve realized that aspiring authors need to acknowledge one truth: You are a writer; you just need to write. A friend taught it to me, and it made all the difference.

Note: I will be discontinuing my two eBooks, Every Writer’s Dream and Before Your First Book, because I’ve combined them with this new content I’ve created. My goal is to have one, strong eBook about writing that I update once in awhile.

    Posted to Facebook and Twiiter.

    It has only been recently that I have considered myself a writer.
    I work as a supervisor at a pizza place and have many feelings as though my art has no value and that calling myself a writer would be an insult to published authors.
    After reading a great book and seeking to pursue my dreams I realized that I did not need to devalue myself because of my day job and identify what drives me and my journey in bringing influence and impact to others.

    I am a writer who seeks to invest in the lives of others to project the forward!

     I’m not entering the contest, but here’s how I know: I can’t imagine day not writing something, and I never feel so alive as when I am writing something. And despite setbacks, hardships, criticism, misunderstandings, I keep coming back to it.

    Yep, whatever else I am, I’m a writer. Hello, world!

    No, I don’t consider myself a writer, but do consider myself full of writing potential — a future writer, perhaps.

    I just posted this on my Pinterest account. Jeff is one of my favorite bloggers.  I’m not a writer. YET.  In preparation I have written down several book titles and some cases even chapter headings.  Now all I need to do is fill them in right? :)  Love your blog Jeff.

    I’d love this book. I tweeted it! Thanks.

    I have written, but I am not a writer. I have not mastered the art of the work! I don’t write like God has called me to. Thanks for the nudge.

    Congratulations Jeff on this milestone.
    Because of you, your 12 blogging lessons and great writings,
    I am a blogger writer.
    New, an infant in all this but a writer blogger non the less.
    Your work has inspired me to tell stories
    about great people in service and encourage others to serve
    God and His people.
    Thank you

    DEAR JEFF:

    I’ve been reading your work for some time now. Practical, valuable and wholesome. Thank you for the affirmation: “I am a writer.”

    Here’s my gratitude in verse. Enjoy!

    W –  Write from your heart, write what you know;
    R –    Reach deep within, reach how you feel;
    I –     Indulge and start, indulge word flow;
    T –    Trust thought unseen, trust writing skill;
    E –    Etch craft and art, etch inner glow;
    R –    Realize  quest keen, realize goodwill.

    A –    Act with passion, act with word wit;
    T –    Thrust clear action, thrust makes due hits!

    W –   Work here and now, work day by day;
    O –    Opt to align, opt to dare do;
    R  -    Reap fond endow, reap precious say;
    K –     Keep your own time, keep up with you!

    Sincerely,
    LEON
