Why You Should Always Tell the Truth

Pinocchio

Every day, we have the choice to tell the truth or not. We can be honest with ourselves about who we are and the challenges we face, or we can lie about it. That’s a choice that’s up to you and me.

Shipping (A Seth Godin-ism)

Seth Godin

Certain words invade your vocabulary — sometimes whether you like it or not. The one that has really invaded mine this year is “ship”. I don’t think that I can go a week without it coming up at least a handful of times in a variety of contexts. I first heard it on Seth Godin’s blog, I believe, and it was a pretty major theme of his recent book Linchpin.

Reverse Procrastination

Think of something that you need to do today but that you really don’t want to do. Chances are that you’re going to procrastinate doing it. But this thing that you don’t want to do is going to keep nagging you. Here’s a thought: do it first. I call it reverse procrastination.

What’s the Most Inspirational Advice You’ve Ever Heard?

From The Office:

Michael: What’s the most inspiring thing I ever said to you?
Dwight: “Don’t be an idiot.” Changed my life.
Dwight: Whenever I’m about to do something, I think, “Would an idiot do that?” And if they would, I do not do that thing.

How to Start a Business on the Cheap

My wife recently started her own family and pet photography business. I just printed out her first invoice. It’s an amazing feeling.

We definitely “bootstrapped” it during the startup phase (this is a term I learned from Seth Godin’s fantastic e-book about entrepreneurship The Bootstrapper’s Bible).

She’s still just getting started, but I anticipate that she’s going to be pretty successful in the coming years due to her diligent work ethic, perseverance, and the fact that this was something she was supposed to do.
